currently reading/read

Not sure if anyone actually pays attention to what I'm allegedly reading over there in the right column, but in case you do I'd like to take a moment to discuss. I have not been reading Farm City for the last 2 months, just so you know. (Finally changed to Three Cups of Tea yesterday, as you can see). I'm terrible about updating that little bit and in the meantime have read many good books that you might want to pick up, if you're into that sort of thing.

Farm City was awesomely inspiring. If you're into growing food, or even just the idea of growing food, you should definitely read it. I tried to convince Brock we should get a pig. He wasn't keen.

And since then, I've read:

The Tipping Point - I know, it's super old. But I just found it while cleaning out our magazine basket and realized I hadn't read it. I love pop social theory books. (is that what you'd call them?)

Harry Potter, book 7 - FINALLY. I'm such a nerd. I didn't want to read it because then the entire series would be over. But I'm glad I did. It no longer stares at me from the bookcase.

Never Let Me Go - Excellent, sort of haunting and grey but thoughtful and lovely too.

Olive Kitteridge - I wasn't sure I was going to like this one when I started, but I did of course. The format is really interesting, little vignettes about a small town that all weave the story of the title character together.

Her Fearful Symmetry - I was a little uncertain about reading this one too. The Time Traveler's Wife was just so beautiful that I didn't want her next book to be less good. It was excellent. Completely different, but she has this way with language and storytelling that draws you in instantaneously.

I'm always terribly sad for a moment when I finish a good book. It's like you have to meet all new people again, just when you've really started to become friends.

My mission is to read as many books as possible before February. As if reading tons now will somehow fill up my reserves so Iwon't need to read for all of next year. Doubtful, but I'm giving it a go.

That's so good to know about Her Fearful Symmetry. Each time I go into a bookstore, I pick it up but then put it back because I'm afraid it wouldn't measure up to her first one. So glad to hear it's just as good!

And I know just what you mean about being sad when you finish a good book. I always go through a slight mourning period too. Have you read Curtis Sittenfeld's American Wife?

I definetly pay attention to what people are currently reading. It's so interesting the gammet of material people choose to read. It also helps to introduce me to good books I may have missed in those big bookstores and libraries. Thanks for giving a quick synopsis on each one! I may have to try that Olive Kitteridge book as many people have mentioned this one.

That funny...I just started reading The Tipping Point recently too. I got stuck in the middle and now I can't get back into it.

I love hearing what people are reading. I am currently reading Malcolm Gladwell's newest book, but I have yet to read the Tipping Point!

Three Cups of Tea is one of my favorite books, so inspiring. I want to check out Farm City!

How serendipitous...just finished Time Traveler's Wife last night and searched for a NYT review of Her Fearful Symmetry this morning...there's always the crippling fear of a second book being a big flop when the first has been such a success. Glad you enjoyed it. When do we get to hear more about your trip up the coast?!

Hi, I don't think I've left a comment before but I had to chip in. I remember after having my son, feeling like I would never be able to read a book again. This was along the lines of loosing a limb to me. I have always read, alot. I am happy to report that I have been able to return to reading, but I think after having a baby I seemed to be in a very foggy head space for about 3 months (due to lack of sleep, hormones, etc...) So I just read alot more magazines in this time. Books were my first love, and like a true friend, they wait for you on the other side. Good luck, for the next few months. We are also expecting a little bundle in February.

Wonderful. I have "Never Let You Go" sitting on the nightstand waiting for me and now have more reason to start it; the rest I added to my wish list. Somehow I missed Her Fearful Symmetry's existence, but I also loved Time Traveler's Wife and have that same fear about second books. The last book I finished was "Kafka by the Shore" by Haruki Murakami and loved it.

I always feel sad after finishing a good book as well. Takes me about a day to shake it off. I've never met anyone else that felt that way, so it's good to know I'm not alone!
I'm glad to hear you liked Her Fearful Symmetry. The Time Travelers Wife is my favorite book so I've been worried I wouldn't like it as well.

i think this may be my first comment here but i love hearing about other people's book lists! i get sad too when a good book is over! i read "a tree grows in brooklyn" over the summer while on my honeymoon and it had that effect on me. not sure if you've read that one yet but it's one of those books that isn't really about anything, mostly just the people's lives, but is still so good! i highly recommend it. ps. i love your blog and when i get a house i want to have a garden and a chicken if i'm lucky:)

Thanks for the tips on the books!
Another list I've jotted down.
I read, Three Cups of Tea and it was so inspiring yet disturbing to me...disturbing in a good way though.
Getting out of my comfort zone is more of a dream than reality and when others do, I'm profoundly amazed.

Doesn't finishing a good book just physically pain you?

I just finished "THese is My Words" on Monday and nearly died, I loved it so much. What can I even consider reading now?!

I didn't know there was another book by the author of The Time Traveler's Wife.

I've now got a hold on it at my library!!

I'm curious too what you thought of Olive Kitteridge. I've never read it.

I'm interested to hear about Three Cups of Tea, it's been in my arsenal of things to read for a while now, but keeps getting pushed down the list.

I don't know how you held off Harry Potter Book 7 for so long.

I am right now working my way through the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

I am such a book nerd.

I love love love the Currently Reading widget!

I also adored the Harry Potter books, but isn't it weird that I almost always feel that I have to explain why I'd read a series of childrens books? I'm trying to stop justifying it bc, really, that series is just excellent, kids book or not.
